“Admit
nothing, deny everything and make counter-accusations” goes the mantra most
secret service agencies and dictatorial governments of the world subscribe to.
Sometime
in 2000, President Obasanjo’s administration set up the Oputa panel (Human
Rights Violations Investigation Commission) to investigate human rights abuses
of the military regimes that seized the country from January 1966 until May
1999, when the last of them handed over to civilians. Officials that appeared
before the commission, and those who didn’t bother to appear, followed the
mantra to the letter, such that the reports of the panel got dumped in the bin
straight after they were submitted.
However, for the past fortnight or so, accusations
and counter-accusations about who killed Dele Giwa have been raging in the
media. The dust raised by it prompted me to dust up my cartoon file on the
subject. Cartoon series titled Mock Trial 1-10 ran for ten weeks in the Guardian
from December 16, 2001, shortly after the Oputa panel finished sitting. Read
