“Admit nothing, deny everything and make counter-accusations” goes the mantra most secret service agencies and dictatorial governments of the world subscribe to.
Sometime in 2000, President Obasanjo’s administration set up the Oputa panel (Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission) to investigate human rights abuses of the military regimes that seized the country from January 1966 until May 1999, when the last of them handed over to civilians. Officials that appeared before the commission, and those who didn’t bother to appear, followed the mantra to the letter, such that the reports of the panel got dumped in the bin straight after they were submitted.
However, for the past fortnight or so, accusations and counter-accusations about who killed Dele Giwa have been raging in the media. The dust raised by it prompted me to dust up my cartoon file on the subject. Cartoon series titled Mock Trial 1-10 ran for ten weeks in the Guardian from December 16, 2001, shortly after the Oputa panel finished sitting. Read all the ten cartoons below
