The post below is a slight reworking of my cartoon of the
same title first published in West Africa
Magazine, in January 2001 under my weekly page, Watching Developments.
I have to re-issue the cartoon because every time the issue
of girl-child pops up in the news or elsewhere, there is always a flurry of
enquiries about the whereabouts of the girl-child cartoon, Guess who’s coming to school. The cartoon used to reside in a
satirical website, Foolscap online, now temporarily closed down for maintenance.
The most vociferous of the enquirers claim familiarity with
the cartoon and express a wish to see it again, first on account of nostalgia
and second, to share with friends through the social media. Some have talked of
their “connections”, which they could invoke to get Girl-Child Education NGOs
to sanctify it! Others have suggested I do a series on the subject and erm… in
colour.
In colour? Although I like colour when I see it in other cartoons,
I am essentially your old-fashioned black and white guy. I am your avant-garde
cartoonist who prefers to use words where an illustration could do. What I am
saying is, it is always with great reluctance that I accompany my editorial
cartoons with drawings. You can then see why adding the painful process of
applying colour to the equation will really be pushing it!
Well, this reworking is the first step! As for
doing a series, it’s an option I will be willing to consider if the right
partnership comes along!
