Honour Among Thieves

THINGS HAVEN’T REALLY CHANGED

Last week, the Federal Government decked 100 “great”, “patriotic” Nigerians with medals to celebrate the Centenary of Nigeria’s amalgamation. As the rest of us who live among them know, many of the recipients are career crooks, villains, looters of the national treasury, murderers, thieves, and you name it!

Here’s a 2008 cartoon made shortly after many of the so-called “patriots” on the centenary list were awarded National honours. Every year names of new converts make the list, swelling membership of the club. They are such incurable suckers for awards that an industry manufacturing awards (equally manned by villainous characters) has been built around them. I can only imagine the centenary list was expanded to accommodate converts like the two gentlemen in the cartoon.

Things haven’t really changed. As a matter of fact, things are getting worse!
